Evidence

Rationale
The southern colony lesson plan was created for a fifth grade classroom linking objectives from the text book to an interactive website. I used an interactive website to help put context to what was learned in the text book. I push myself to make social studies more engaging and interesting for students. I push for students to remember why things happened in history, not just what happened. Websites where students build their own southern plantation not only reinforce facts from the time period but engage them in decision making while using what they know about history. I observed that students not only learned the basic information from the lesson but grasped the material at a much higher level. They were actively engaged in the classroom and many went home to try the simulation again. This lesson reinforced my thoughts that technology is the best and easiest way to engage students.

KSD:

1.K. 2 The teacher understands how students’ conceptual frameworks and their misconceptions for an area of knowledge can influence their learning.
The creation of this lesson demonstrates an understanding that students can often hear pieces of information and put together an incorrect picture of what history was like. I used the simulation website to reinforce what an accurate plantation in the southern colony could have been like including crops, buildings, and growing conditions.

1.S.3 The teacher can evaluate teaching resources and curriculum materials for their comprehensiveness, accuracy, and usefulness in representing particular ideas and concepts
The creation of this lesson demonstrates how I could find and evaluate a teaching resource to help represent particular ideas and concepts. I used an interactive website to represent what building a southern plantation would have been like in colonial time.

1.D.3 The teacher has enthusiasm for the discipline(s) s/he teaches and sees connections to everyday life
The creation of this lesson demonstrates my understanding of how students use technology in their lives. Students are engaged when they are interactive with technology and I used a website to engage them while achieving learning objectives in social studies.
